The quiet board: what chairs now ask of a search partner

The best chairs do not want a circus. They want a partner who can hold a secret, test a brief, and leave no fingerprints on the market. Published 18 Aug 2026.

A search that becomes a story is usually a search that was badly held. Chairs know this. What they ask of a partner has shifted: fewer slide decks, more judgement, and a refusal to “warm up” a market that did not need warming.

We are retained to reduce uncertainty, not to perform activity. That means a smaller number of conversations, held at the right altitude, with people who would take the call from the chair themselves. It also means telling a client when the brief will not attract the people they named over dinner.

Discretion is an operating system

Confidentiality is not a clause in an engagement letter. It is a way of keeping lists, booking rooms, writing notes, and choosing who is in the meeting. The firms that treat it as marketing copy are easy to spot from the candidate side.

Steorling was built for chairs who would rather the market learned of an appointment on the day it was announced.
